Student Support

A Safe & Supportive

Environment for all

At Marian, we provide a structured pastoral care system to support student learning and wellbeing. This includes a dedicated pastoral and wellbeing team led by the Leader of Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care.

This team, under the guidance of the Assistant Principal,  and in collaboration with other counselling and wellbeing staff, provide pastoral and wellbeing support for all students at the College:

  • Leader of Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care
    • Leads the  pastoral care team and wellbeing teams and directs and supports their work to promote the best outcomes for learning, student belonging and engagement at school.
  • Pastoral Leaders-year 7-12
      • Pastoral Leaders commence with their year group in year 7 and  follow the cohort through to  Year 12.
      • The Pastoral Leader keeps track of each student, in terms of academic progress and personal welfare.
      • They also have a role in the oversight of attendance, general behaviour and organisation for students.
      • Pastoral leaders work with the Leader of Student Wellbeing and Pastoral Care to facilitate wellbeing and pastoral educational programs and year level milestones and events.
    • Working with parents and carers: An important part of student development is collaborating with parents. Please contact your child’s Pastoral Leader if you have a concern.

What other support do our students receive?

  • Home Room teachers
    • The homeroom teacher is the first contact for students each day.
    • This teacher takes interest in students and notices absences, sickness or injury.
    • Parents are encouraged to communicate  homeroom teachers around general issues like attendance, academic progress and minor pastoral issues.
    • The homeroom teacher will refer  to the Pastoral leader where necessary.
  • Counselling Services
    • Student Counselling services are provided by Thrive Psychology. Thrive counsellors are embedded within the school to deliver school counselling.  Students are able to self-refer or may be referred by a Pastoral Leader.  Parents/carers should contact Pastoral Leaders or the school counsellor/s if they wish to refer their child.
    • Counselling conversations  aim to provide solutions focused support and counselling around a range of issues.
    • Thrive Counsellors will refer students with more significant support needs to the right external mental health worker when required.
    • From 2025 Marian will have two Thrive Counsellors available.
  • Student Wellbeing Support Officer
    • The SWSO is funded by a special grant and works with students and groups providing well-being programs for 2 days a week.
